Question One In this discussion, consider how research questions differ from one another. How do you know when to use bottom-up versus top-down modeling to answer a research question? As you learn about these two different models, does it impact your own research question? Why or why not?
Two common approaches are used when modeling the research questions, namely, the bottom-up modeling and the top-down modeling. The top-down modeling approach goes from the general to specific question. This strategy is best suitable for research questions that test the participant’s understanding before dwelling on the details (Itti & Borji, 2014). This approach is also used for sensitive research that involves individual perception and connection to the topic, such as personal experience with a certain treatment intervention, among other sensitive topics. Therefore, starting with a general question will help the researcher gauge the awareness, level of confidence, and accuracy of the answers provided to the general question before answering the specific questions.
The bottom-up approach is designed, so the researcher starts by asking the specific questions as they move to the general questions (Itti & Borji, 2014). This approach is best suited to a researcher who identifies and resolves the smallest problems and then integrates them to solve a bigger problem. Since the researcher starts with a specific question and moves to the general questions, this approach is best suited to use the details known to the responder to address the bigger question. These two approaches will impact the research questions since I will have to structure the questionnaire starting with the general question and moving to specific ones in the top-down approach. I will design the questionnaire in the bottom-up approach, starting with the more specific questions and then moving to general questions.
